What is TCP/IP?

TCP/IP stands for Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol. It is the standard, basic protocol for all services on the internet. TCP/IP controls how data is transferred between different computers on the Internet. Invented by the Department of Defense, it was first actualized and put in use with the Berkely UNIX operating system, which was designed under contract with DOD to interoperate using TCP/IP as a basic, native protocol for the BSD UNIX operating system. TCP/IP standards are maintained by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) and described in documents known as RFC's (requests for comments).
