So you learned how to make a web page, Now What?

Its easy to post your website on Cheshire Net. Before you begin, you
first need an FTP (File Transfer Protocal) program, this software is what
is used to upload your pages on our system. To get an FTP program, go to
our website, www.cheshire.net, Go to the Software Downloads section next
click your appropriate platform, either Macintosh, or Windows.Once in this
section, scroll down to the section for an FTP program. The Mac version is
called Transmit, the PC version is called WsFTP clicking this link will
bring you to the download area, It may have a form you need to fill out to
get it, fill out what you want, but be sure to fill out the required
section, These companies will not sell your personal information, Its a
small price to pay for free software. Now, once you have downloaded the
program (Mac or PC) it will download to your desktop. Double-click the
Icon to Install. Once installed open it.

Once the progam is opened, you will see a window titled Session Properties
The first field is called Profile Name if it is not empty, press the New
button, to the right. You can name the profile anything you want, in the
Host Name/Address enter ftp.cheshire.net, all lowercase, no spaces, no
quotation marks. Leave the Host Type to Automatic detect. In the User ID
section, enter your username , this is the same as your username to
connect.In the Password field, enter your password, again, this is the same
password that you use to connect to cheshire.net. Once this information
has been entered, press the Ok button, It may ask for your password a
second time, if so, enter it and press Enter in a few seconds, you will be
in your directory. You will see several files appear in the right window,
DO NOT MOVE, DELETE, OR MODIFY THESE FILES, they are for your account and
altering them may cause damage to your account. If you see a folder inside
the right window called www double-click to enter if you do not have a www
directory,you will need to make one. To make one, press the MkDir button on the
RIGHT hand side, call it www (remember, lowercase, no spaces) press enter,
the directory will appear, double-click to enter it. The next step
requires you to know about how your PC saves files and where they are
placed, you will have to go hunting to find it, Since you have made
webpages, this probably is not a problem and you can find them, If you
don't know how to find the pages on your system, (where you saved them)
you should consult any tutorials, books or reference guides that you might
have. Now you have found your pages, to upload, simply select the files
from the left window. Press the --> button between the 2 file windows,
also, be sure to include any images you may have, if they are mixed in
with the pages, click --> to move them over, if they are in an images
folder, select the entire folder and press --> it will ask transfer
directory structures say yes. Finally, be sure that your homepage, (the
first page you want viewers to see) is named index.html This naming is
very important, if you call it anything else,it will not show up and when you
view your site, you will just see a listing of you directory, not your
page. That should do it. now to view your site, open your web browser
(Internet Explorer, Netscape, etc..) your address will be
http://adam.cheshire.net/~yourusername. Type this in the Address bar and
press Return you page should load.
